I posted a thread saying I was going to get rid of them. However, circumstances have changed and I'm proud to say I'm keeping them. I've grown really fond of them by the way. They've grown so much in the past month! Now that I've been feeding them by hand, they "beg" for food. Also--every time I go near the tank they swim to the surface and appear to be following me around. Its sooo cute!
Thanks everyone for your continued support and help.
:D

That's wonderful news Brella! :D

They are highly addictive little creatures with their individual personalities and they are so interactive.

I try to suppress the urge to reach for the pellet or worm bin whenever mine look at me with begging eyes - it's not easy but I manage it somehow! ;)

Cheers Jacq.

I'am glad you get to keep them. They look great. Were did you get them?

Thats awesome, my mum told me to get rid of mine but i could never do that i love them so much:p

Thats great news !

I just bought my first one which I have called OXO.On Thursday I pick up another which I will call PAXO.

Can anyone tell me how many young ones (3inches) I can keep togehter safely ?

Also how old would a 3inch one be roughly ?

Thanks guys,

Jon

How many axolotls you can safely keep together depends largely on the size of the tank you have (volume of water). You will also need two 'hides' per axolotl and the smaller the tank, the more vigilant you need to be with water quality and cleaning debris. Axolotls are very sensitive to high levels of ammonia and to dilute the ammonia levels (if you haven't yet cycled your tank) is to have a larger size tank and to do daily 25% water changes. There is lots of information on the boards here about cycling your tank.
I'm not sure how old 3" axies are, I'm sure somebody else will be able to tell you, my guess is a couple of months, but don't quote me on that!
Good luck with your new axolotls! Kerry.

Thanks for that Kerry,I have just one right now in a large goldfish bowl (we are on holiday) on return to home I will re house them in an aquarium with filter lighting etc,but bear in mind the hides, and water changes.

Thank you,that was very helpful.

btw

I have a cousin and aunt in Winterbourne.

Jon is the new axolotl you are getting on thursday from the same shop and tank as your present axolotl?
If it isn't then you will need to keep it separate from the other for around 30 days. This will prevent any sickness/diseases one or the other MAY have that it could pass on to the other.
What part of the u.k. are you from?
Always nice to see another U.K. member.

Another thing to bear in mind with keeping youngsters together is that they tend to be more aggressive. So obviously keeping lots together can result in lots of fingers and toes missing.
It depends on the diet your axolotl has been given but an axolotl of 3 inches is around the 2-3 month age possibly a little older.

Brella, that's great news. I'm so glad to hear.

I got mine from wards also. He was sooo small when i got him, but he has doubled in size since i got him. I sit there and watch him for hours every night.:p

Hi Becky,
Thanks for your advice, that is just the sort of info I need being brand new to keeping them (Axolotls)
It is the same shop who will be getting him/her from the same supplier.I really love these charming little creatures, they have such character.
I am in Kent having moved from London about 18months ago.I will probably stick to the two ( a brownish coloured one and the albino) for the meantime, but in the future I would like to expand.
How long have you been an enthusiast ? Do you know how old they have to be to tell which dender they are ?
Nice to meet a fellow Brit on here as you say :)
Have a good day, hope to chat again soon.
Regards,
Jon
