Hey everybody,

Here is the newest member of the family, it's a 2 years old adult male!
But he is very small for an adult... I bought him last friday, and I found he is very thin and has almost no gills!

Anyway, I will take care of him very much!

Aww he's cute. Can't wait to see him once he's fattened up and his gills have regenerated. Kind of reminds me of my axolotl when I bought him in January. He was so small and no gills, they recover so quickly! :happy:

I absolutely love your Axolotls! The photos are fab. You take photos at the right time. They are such characters and like posing. Cannot wait until mine has grown. He/She's only 3 months.

I love the lighting in these pics It just makes them stand out so much better! Also love to see that other peoples' melanoids also have slightly paler bellies - Toothless is a little paler on hers too, I was wondering if it was normal. Got to love seeing big healthy frondy gills!

I hope to post Toothless on here when I can. She's really little and needs to grow her gills too but she's already got so much character!

Axolotls follow the food source. If you feed pellets or other food on the bottom they will hang about there if they are hungry. If you add frogs or fish that hang about under/on the surface thats where you will find a hungry axolotl. It is surprising to see what an active predator they can be when they have larger live foods in their tank, they are not just an ambush predator, they cruise around searching for food, then drift towards their target and lunge when it is within range. If you look at a wild type axolotl you will see its belly is often lighter than the rest of it, this is a common adaption to break up an animals silhouette to avoid predation from below it, which indicates they are not just bottom feeders.

I also take out all the stones that I was using as substrate to avoid to my axies to swallow it.

I'm loving my little new one! But I just did not decide the name! I'm thinking in "Remie", "Shippou" or "Suppy"...

I'm very sad... Thor, the adult male, died this saturday...

He was with more or less 6 years old. I bought him more than 1 year ago, and he came very skinny and with almost no gills. So I cared of him and so far he looks well, much better than when he came.

I have no idea why he died, he was eating and swimming normally... It really surprised me and my family.

So anyway, here is a photo of the the difference of his development between the third week in my home and some days ago...

He had developed himself well in this last year, and I thought I was doing a good job.

Its strange to look the aquarium without my funny Thor now.

Also, I vote for Shippou, in honour of the character from Inu Yasha, but Suppy - which could be a Cardcaptor Sakura reference - is cute too! Thanks, too, for the answer to my question - you are right! I got a proper fluorescent light yesterday and when I turned it on to see if she was okay with it, I noticed she had lots of olive green patches over her body and a white belly - she is wildtype! She was sold as a 'black axolotl' and looked like one for days, but she's definetely wildtype. I'm quite happy about this

I'm so sorry to read of Thor's passing

You are a wonderful axie dad & should know that you've always done your best with them all sometimes no matter what we do there are predisposed conditions we cannot control. You provided him a wonderful life & a beautiful environment & friends to spend his life with - sounds like he lived an ideal life

I already took out the substrate of river stones before, to avoid that my axies swallow it, and now I put some fine sand as substrate, what do you think?

I have to take better photos of the tank to show the lay out, but now here are some basic photos :tongue:
