Well Ive had newts before and Ive had aquariums before but that was awhile ago. Now this is my first aquarium in a long time and its catered to newts.

The island is that hollowed out log, its sticking out about 5x5 in out of the water and its covered by those fake plants. The fake ones offer alot of hiding places and cover. The ones in the gravel are real plants and the anacharis is growing fast.

Feel free to suggest anything and criticize. Ive heard about reducing gravel, but thats still being moved around for the plants.

The tank is currently cycling and empty. Know of any newts looking for a good home?

looking good, I hope you get some newts to complete it, good luck

Thanks guys. I hoping for some eggs so if I do get some, they wont see that tank for a couple of months.

I wanted to get some fish though, I was thinking some tetras and danios. Good choice?

Most people here would advise against fish and newts together, because the active fish tend to stress the less active newts.

I've tried it with danios myself, back when I first started keeping newts, and it didn't work out. Two of the three Tarichas that I had with the Danios were extremely stressed, and lost a whole lot of weight; and the third newt in the tank ate two of the Danios before I managed to separate them.

The newts would probably eat the tetras, too, since they're so small.

If you like tetras, you should check out white cloud minnows. They look like tetras, but tolerate much colder temps.

Looks like its off to a good start. What sp. are you planning on?

To continue your previous thread...plastic shoe/sweaterboxes are pretty much the same thing. I don't even remember what I bought the ones I use as but pretty much any plastic container that holds around 1/2 a gallon or more should work for larvae.

I dig the white clouds so thats probably the way to go. Ive read Danios can be too active so I guess that can really stress out a newt.

Dang Weld, those either had to be some small Danios or you had some huge newts! The neons I can see being eaten, but Ive never seen a newt large enough that can eat a fish larger than a fingernail. I know they exist Im just saying Ive never seen them in person cause all I see are firebellies and theyre tiny, about as long as your little finger.

If Im lucky Joseph, some Alpine eggs could come my way. But luck and Dan dont go together most of the time. I have plenty of plastic shoe boxes and everything that they can easily be raised in. I got my fingers crossed.

Unfortunaltey looking at my Anacharis there in the pic compared to now, it seems to be dying. Damn, I really like this plant

Yeah. White clouds are about neon tetra size and not the brightest or fastest fish out there so you could lose a few. If the tank has lots of plants they should breed readily and restock themselves thouh.

That looks like typical petstore anacharis. I have no idea but all the anacharis I bought from petstores died on me. Later, I got some from a friend w an outdoor pond and it does great. Turned my own outdoor pond into solid anacharis and survives and grows(slowly) even in newt tanks. My only guess is that they do a poor job shipping them.

Cool. Well my plants arent doing so hot right now. Looks like I have to perfect my technique there a bit. Im betting the petshops care had a bit to do with it.

My newt tank is slightly mixed. I have a 48 gallon show which was originally just gravel and plants. I have three Granulosas, a small herd of ghost shrimp and four white clouds. They all had plenty of room and all got along well. Six weeks ago I moved all of them to a 20 Gallon tall while I rearranged the larger tank. Perhaps it was because they have been together for like seven years at this point but even in the closer space they are quite happy with each other. The biggest problem I have is keeping plants alive in the winter when the tank cools to 65. I took some pics and will try to post them in a few days when I get a chance to play. I have been trying to get pics of the shrimp grooming the newt. On occasions when one of them sheds, the shrimp help with the skin. Of course, the other newts eat it as well.

Hey thats cool. Im defenatley interested in seeing some pics!
