My new axie's seem to be losing their gills?

Hi Maia,
The best tool ever invented for removing axolotl pooh/left over food and most things regarding axolotl is the turkey baster...its designed to suck up the juices from various meats to then squirt over the top of the roast to add more flavour/ moisture etc.. It can be purchased from cook shops/ food stores etc. It is a suprisingly usefull bit of equipment in regards to aiding your care of the axolotl. I'm sorry you have had such an awful time with them so far, but lets hope all is now well for your little guy.

the best thing to use for spot cleaning is a turkey baster yo should be able to pick one up anywhere that sells kitchen utensils.
dont forget only 20/30% WATER NO MORE AS YOU WILL JUST KEEP ON RESTARTING THE CYCLE.
if you let the water you are going to use for change stand for 24 hours you dont need dechlorinator.

Any ammonia or nitrite levels over 0 are considered unsafe. This isn't too much of a problem as long as you're doing frequent partial waterchanges.
