She is a full grown adult, and had always been very dark, but since moving her into a new tank with lighter sand she has apparently started getting much lighter! None of my other axolotls have been affected, and she seems just as normal (laying eggs still even!).

I've heard this is a phenomena that happens to wildtypes sometimes, what are you guys' thoughts?
She now looks almost silver dalmatian!

These are some before pics and after pics! (The pic of her in the small container is when I first got her as a sub-adult!)

Some axies will respond to their environment with a colour change - light levels and background colour are often triggers.

I know. I wonder if my other wild will change as well. Nothing so far though.:ufo:
i hate to revive an old thread like this, but i’m curious (sorry john)
i have what was sold to me as a melanoid female, who now appears to be axanthic most of the time, and occasionally looks like a dalmatian. how? why? no idea. i think the lighter substrate color i have has lightened her up quite a bit, but ive also noticed she changes colors based on activity level. pictures below in order of first getting her, up to the other day when she appeared like a light axanthic/dalmatian
just wondeirng what everyone’s thoughts were, as i’m very interested to find out what my lovely gal might be!!
(last two pictures are the most dalmatian-like, imo)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
