Hi, I am new to the forum. I live in Tahlequah Oklahoma right on the Illinois river... man is it pretty. I had a question, the temperatures will be near 80 this coming friday. I was wanting to go out and find Salamanders and newts. I think I have found the perfect place. There is a lot of streams and mosses and caves... Any techniques for searching for them, OF COURSE SEEING AS IT IS A STATE PARK I WILL ONLY BE VIEWING THESE CREATURES AND PHOTOGRAPHING. Will 80 degrees be warm enough to get them to come out. What if I went tonight? the low is 56 do they come out in those temperatures? I will be going at night. Any techniques in searching for them. Surely I cant go wrong this places main object is to conserve these caves for salamanders and bats. Anyone wanna go with me haha?

80 is pretty hot for sals. I suspect unless it rains, or you're searching in the water, you probably won't find anything. The best time to find them is at night when it's 60 and drizzly.

My old stomping grounds! I grew up in Claremore and mandered that area a lot back then. A really good technique once the weather starts to warm up is to night walk, especially along ridge lines that have caves. You will be shocked at how many you can see in the cracks and crevices that way, stuff you will rarely flip.

My old stomping grounds too! I lived in Tahlequah, Oklahoma during the nineties. I bet you'll find salamanders around the "streams and mosses and caves" near the Illinois when it cools down later this week. Let us know how it went.
