Hi,
I'm hoping someone can give me some advice. One of my guys is sick (his tankmate seems ok). He is suffering from what looks like a white fungus which is growing around his eyes, gills, tail, and what appears to be inside his nose. This has been happening on and off for a couple of year but a bit of maintenance usually clears it up. However, about a month or so ago it got really bad, so I got some 'fungi treatment' from the local aquarium (i've since read this may be toxic to axolotyls as it contained Malachite Green, Methylene Blue and Acriflavine - is this correct?). The treatment appeared to work after a couple of doses and he returned to normal. Over the last week, the growth has returned worse than ever and he is looking rather sick - sitting on the bottom in an almost vertical position with his front legs just hanging. He hasn't been as hungry (but still eating) and his gills are mostly down flat. I can wipe the white growth carefully of most parts (except the stuff up his nose) but it reappears with 24 hours.
Would it be wise to do a thorough clean of the tank and a full water change? What about a short bath in salt water? Can sea water do for this or is it best to mix up a saline solution?
Please.. I need help. I think it is fairly urgent as I don't want my little guy to die.
Thanks,
