Hi I got my baby axolotl on Monday, he's about 4cm long and about 4 to 5 weeks old, however he's not eaten anything today. Yesterday he ate a few bloodworms and everything seemed fine, I changed the water last night afterwards.
Today, I tried feeding him and when I dangled a bloodworm in front of him, he went straight for it, however he spat it out after chewing on it for a bit. Perhaps it was too big? I've tried again but he won't go for any now, and has started swimming away when I try to feed him again.
I'm quite worried so any advice would be appreciated.

That's an awfully small axolotl and they typically aren't sold until they're at least double his current size. I don't know where you got yours from, but they definitely shouldn't be selling axolotls that young.

I don't know at what size axolotls can stop eating live food, but I'm not sure yours has reached that size yet. I highly recommend offering it live food like daphnia, brine shrimp, or even cut up live blood worms. He may not be eating his current food because young axolotls typically show no interest in food that isn't moving.

What are your tank parameters by the way? He could also have a decrease in appetite if your tank has any ammonia. How many gallons is your tank and was it fully cycled before bringing your lotl home?

I hope your little guy starts eating soon! Please keep me updated :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
