hi i have a mexican walking fish and he has a sore on his back and i just noticed it is bleeding is there something i can do to make it heal and stop bleeding i will try post a photo

Just keep an eye on it, if it looks infected or starts developing fungus then you will need to do saltbaths; otherwise just leave him alone and make sure his tank temperature is kept below 24C.

Do you know how he got the sore? Does he have any other tank companions and have you checked your water parameters - ammonia, nitrite and nitrates.

One thing - do not use any fish medicines as advised by petshops as most fish medicines can be toxic to an axolotl.

i think he got the sore coz he sits under the filter and the end of it just made a mark on his back but it was never bleeding he has had the sore for a few months my other walking fish died they wouldnt eat he is alone now how do i check the water??
i really dont want my lil axie to die this one is my fav one he scares me at times and now that his sore is bleeding i dunno what to do

Find some way to block off the part of the tank where he brushes up against the filter end. Put some rocks up against it, or something that will stop him from going there.

Some pet shops will test water for you if you take them a sample (use a glass jar, and don't let the water sit around for long before getting to the store).

ok i will try that i will go to the aquarium near my home get them to test the water and maybe take my lil fishie with me so they can see him

You know its not a "fishie" right?

Hey now I'm a "very active member" yay!

Yeah pet store can be pretty redundant about this type of things.

One time I was calling around for mudpuppies and the lady on the phone said "We don't have dogs"

well i went to the aquarium they told me to put betadine on the wound so i bought some but i havent put it on yet just wanted to check with you guys first to see if thats what i should do coz its actually a sore he has not fungus

Don't think you should use that. You should try salt baths.

Saltbaths are actually very good for not only fungus but infections and sores.

Isn't betadine a human medicine sore thing. I wouldn't put it on my axie. Do you know how to do salt baths. If not, you must put your axie in a separate container and put 2-3 teaspoons of salt per litre. only bath for 5-10 mins 15 mins max or the salt will start to burn your axie and make everything worse. You don't have to do anything to your axie just sit it in the salty water for the previous times mentioned. If don't understand just ask Kapo. She's a pro at this. I learnt all this salt bath stuff from Kapo.

And Kapo if i missed anything feel free to add more

Oh i forgot it has to be dechlorinated water

what is your tank temperature? It could be stress related due to heat, if over 24C, his sore and/or water quality.

i dunno what the temp of the tank is i am gonna wash n clean the tank on the weekend put him in clean water he still isnt eating i wanna see if i can buy some earth worms coz there is none in the backyard

Hi Jay, Yes you are right. My sister rises sheep and they also use it for hoof rot. A couple years ago they stop selling it around her.

Don't wash or clean your tank, you will invariably muck up any established bacteria which is needed for your tank cleaning.

A thermometer is one of the most important things to have if you are keeping axolotls; so my advice get a thermometer and put it in your tank. It may very well be heat related stress. Cleaning and washing out your tank will do nothing but invariably harm your axie, as you will end up starting a new cycle to establish the good bacteria you've cleaned out - this can take 3-8 weeks to cycle.

So, buy a thermometer and don't clean your tank. Take a sample of tankwater to the petshop/aquarium as advised by the others and get them to test for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Get them to write the results/figures down and come back here if you're not sure what they mean.

hi i got the water checked out everything is fine and normal the temp of the water is like 21-20
i think thats normal too
he still isnt eating now he is started to float his tummy looks a lil fat i dunno if he will last any longer
