Hi guys!

I've had my axolotl Pablo for about 4 years now. I got him when he was fully grown. When I purchased him he was in a tank with another axolotl, but at the time I only had space for one axolotl. There are currently juvenile axolotls at my local pet store, which is pretty rare, and I'm thinking about getting one of them. I need some help though because I've never owned more than one axolotl.

The available axolotls are too young to be sexed, so I risk the chance of ending up with a female. Would I ever be able to put them together if it does end up a female? What would happen if she laid eggs? I'd be keeping the new one in a different, smaller tank until they're fully grown or almost fully grown and then would slowly introduce them to each other.

I've attached some pictures of the little one at the pet store and one of my guy at home.

I really appreciate any help!

It is always better to get a axolotl of equal size or near as possible as no matter how placid a axolotl seams anything smaller will be seen as food and you could just be providing a expensive snack.

If you kept the new one in a separate tank until it is almost fully grown, you should be able to sex it. If males and females are housed together, they will breed. Trust me. I have a male and a previously unsexed, smaller axolotl. They were separated due to size difference. The divider fell down for about 20 hours (I didn't know since they are kept in the basement) and they bred. No worries though. Neither was injured due to size difference. I just have 205 babies to take care of now.
If you added a female with Pablo, they would breed. The parents would most likely eat a lot of the eggs, then babies if enough eggs survived to hatching. Pablo would continue to try breeding with the female if they are not separated. This would not be healthy for her. It would be stressful and take a large toll on her body. Separate tanks are best, but a divider can work in a pinch. Don't expect it to keep them from breeding in the long run though.
