Hi, I am new to the whole world of amphibians. Right now I am setting up a tank for an axolotl. Tank has been running for 5 days now, so not ready for an axie yet. This seems like a fantastic resource and I am happy to have found it.

I'm in Wisconsin. Both of my teens are pretty psyched about adding an axolotl to our family. We have a bearded dragon and a few fish, guppies and a beta (in separate tanks). An axolotl seems like a sort of blending of the two pet types :happy:

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
