Hello, My name is Mary. I'm an Axylotl owner by mistake, but I'm learning. I rescued an albino axylotl from a girl who had one in a tank with absolutely nothing in the tank but water. When I saw her she was cleaning the tank for the first time in a few months, and filling it up with water straight from the bathtub. (not used, but full of the usual chlorine etc that they clean our water with). I know about fish (have outdoor fish in a pond) and suggested that this may not be the best for this creature, but she said she didn't care. Her mother told me that she had hardly fed it for a year and it was disgraceful. I couldn't stop thinking about it!
So a couple of days later I offered to take it off her hands as she had indicated that she had hoped it would die to get rid of it. She asked $60 and I just said sure.
I now have this Axylotl that I've learned about. I put slate on the bottom of the tank, added a pretend plant and cleaned and boiled some stones from my pond (to make sure they didn't have any diseases) and it is fun to see her wander around her tank with more energy.
I didn't expect to know anything about this endangered creature, but I have one now and want to do my best for her. Apparently her name is Bonnie. I may come up with something different.
