Hi Everyone,

This blog has been incredibly helpful for a newbie like myself raising a juvenile Axolotl. I picked up "Taco" on February 28th, I was told he was about 2 months old.

I've kept him tubbed with daily water changes. I fed frozen bloodworms multiple times a day and recently introduced cut up red wrigglers too. Here's a pic from this week:

I've had a 10 gallon tank cycling for about a month now. I used a filter from an already established tank and the parameters seem good, but i'm not in a rush to move Taco just yet. First i'm worried 10 gallons is too small - could this work short-term? At what age/size do you usually move from tubbing to tank?

Here's a photo of the tank setup, please let me know any feedback! I used aquarium sand instead of gravel and will not have the lights on when the Axo is introduced. I have an air pump in there right now (the clam) and am wondering if that's suitable.

I've learned a lot more since I first got Taco and set this tank up, realizing 10 gallons might be too small i'm open to restarting/cycling an entire new set up if its best! Any advice or feedback on his growth, set up or care is appreciated :)

Hi,
this axolotl looks perfectly healthy :)
I'll try to give you some pieces of answers.

A 10 gallons is a bit too small but it will be enough for a short term.
The problem is : the short term often becomes long term, except if you're already planning to find a bigger tank within the next few months.

Since you have sand in your tank, you should wait until your axolotl is big enough to be able to pass easily the sand throw its gut, otherwise there is an impaction risk.
(It's difficult from the photo to appreciate the grain of your sand, so I cannot be more precise)

and will not have the lights on when the Axo is introduced. I have an air pump in there right now (the clam) and am wondering if that's suitable.
If you have live plants in your tank, then they'll need light to thrive.
Your light doesn't seem to be strong enough to disturb an axolotl. If it does, add more plants to create shadowy areas.

Someone alerted in a previous post against the risk of pieces of fake plants swallowed by an axolotl an causing severe impaction.
Check if your fake plants are solid enough

Finally, we are in march, but what are the summer temperatures in Toronto ?
Axolotls shouldn't be exposed to temperatures above 22°C (below 20°C is better).
