Hi,
I got my baby axolotl in July. He (Skittles) is awesome and I've had so much fun with him! He is still eating bloodworms at feeding time and swimming around...his water tests out great...but, he hasn't pooped in three days. I notice that the area right at the base of his tail is swollen, so I'm guessing he is constipated. His tank does have very fine sand on the bottom, so I'm concerned about that, and the temperature of his tank is 62 degrees-64 degrees. I just read about putting him in the refrigerator? That seems scary, but is that what I need to do to help him? I so appreciate your help-

Sarah

I have HEARD that you can tub the axolotl in the refrigerator if you are afraid they are blocked up. This will slow their metabolism and allow them to pass the blockage or poo.

do not fridge, its very dangerous and ONLY for life or death situations. blood worms aren't a good staple diet, you need earthworms, pallets or repashy. 3 days isn't too concerning just keep the water as cool as you can and he should be fine

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
