Hi everyone!
I've had two wild type Axies hanging out with me for nearly 2 years! Love them dearly and have just been pretty much guessing on their sexes, but now I'm ready to have some of the experts tell me who I've actually got here! To take these pics I've put them in their smaller tank I keep them in for when I'm cleaning out the 90L tank they live in.
The reason I'm finally getting around to it is that recently (last 3 months) I've been getting some lovely sperm packets left about the tank. There's A LOT of this stuff. I mean, a heck of a lot. I'm sucking the stuff out like crazy. I've only once seen it in the 'pyramid' shape, all other times it seems to have been shredded up by their moving around the tank etc. So it's floating all over the place and I'm cleaning the tank out frequently.
I got the pair of them as juveniles from a tank at a petshop in NZ 2 years ago that housed about 7 axies. It was pretty awful to see some of the others that were clearly unhappy in their living conditions. I got these two because they were the two that were nearest in size and I didn't want any fighting. They've always got on well, no issues whatsoever.
I've yet to have any eggs (not that I particularly want any), which is making me wonder about the sexes. Clearly I've got a boy, or maybe two? But why are they sperming so much if there's no female (a guess, since no eggs yet).
So this is Romi. We've always affectionately referred to her as the girl of the pair with no proof whatsoever. She's a bit bigger than the other. Her cloaca looks kinda whitish from the underside at the moment and I've seen it a fair bit bigger than in these pics in the past. I've always suspected 'she' was the sperm culprit. Sorry for the average pictures! (LOVE the first pic I got of 'her')
Will update this thread with picture of my other axie in a few minutes! Any info would be greatly appreciated!
