On our weekly trip to the pet shop for food (was banished from the store) on arrival at home was surprised to find out the mrs and daughter had brought a new addition to the children Lol (new tank sprung a leak waiting for it to dry before i transfer them over.) have noticed since new addy has been added rest of the children have all been carring their fonds upright and proud newest addition if you get close to the glass swims back and forth and shacks head violently like it is about to fall of unsure of it color and unsure of it name so looking for help in these two aspects. if anyone can tell me if it is a wild type or not.

Re: Newst addition

I can't really tell from the picture but I think he is a gold albino - are his eyes red? Or yellow/gold? I had a gold albino and named him Hawn (as in Goldie...).

Re: Newst addition

Oh. Genetics is my absolute worst topic about axolotls. So now I think maybe you have what they call a "copper"? I think these "coppers" are some sort of variant of their own, only two of them can produce more of the same. I can't remember if nobody is sure of the genetics of this phenotype or if it's only I who keeps forgetting. Anyway they are like a pale tan version of a wild type, with light brown spots.

In any case, he looks awfully pretty. If you get a better picture, it might be easier to judge his genetics. Better than me guessing, right? The genetics page of the axolotl.org site has a picture of a gold albino, but not of a copper.

I don't know about out where you are. Here, I would say, yes, they are somewhat seldom. Personally, in my little world of meager experience, I have seen more gold albinos than coppers, but more coppers than melanoids. They are nowhere nearly as rare as the "harlequins", though.

Re: Newst addition

he's very pretty!

As for a name, how about looking up 'copper' in some different languages?
like, Cuivre, Koper, Kupari, Chalkós, Copar, Cobre (all from google translate)

I like exotic sounding names for axeys because theyre exotic looking critters :)

Re: Newst addition

Thanks melfly, blueberlin and thanks for the name suggestions guys. a harliquin my very first axies many years back was one of them. This new addition, I have never seen this color variation and I am so happy the girls got it and I am actually thinking it is a copper as the brown spots are the same color as airadonna(brown wild type) . I cant say spinx as she has changed her color for some reason (was brown but now black wth grayish white round her fonds

@Eva: you haven´t forgotten.;)
The genetics of copper isn´t still explored. That´s why you cannot find it in the genetic lists.

But fact is, that the parents must be both copper to "produce" copper offspring. Otherwise, if only one parent is copper, the offspring will be only wild.

Also, the new one should have been quarantined for 30 days.

Re: Newst addition

yes i tried explaning that point mel the mrs gave me a oh thats right and the daughter( swear she has got my personality type) just basicaly said boof ... lol i'm keeping a close eye on it all and the mrs is watching the eggs atm

Re: Newst addition

If both parents have to be copper how did this colour type come to exist? it is like a chicken or egg situation isnt it, were did the original copper parents come from! when I brought my two there was a sort of rusty gold at the store I wonder if it was the same colour type

Re: Newst addition

Wow, Vlad, what a cool axie! I see what you meant in my thread now but yours is gorgeous (correction: your daughter's - right?)! Quite a find I would say! My wild is very green, not copper like this at all. Beautiful, looking forward to more pics of this one! ;)

thank you dragonlady and trust me there are more pics coming and yes koper is my daughters axie and atm she has me working on her new tank(she wanted a tank set up like the very first idea i ever used) it's a 3meter by 2 meter the depth of it i haven't measured it yet(old spa bath) and i'm trying to work out a way to take out the steel spa jet hole thingys for her but here's a few pics of her idea She will be using a old canister we picked up for her an aqua one type and she's also come up with a bar fridge as a chiller type idea for the temp in the tank

That's an interesting idea. I have no idea how to remove the jets but it would be cool to reuse the holes for the filter. If you can't remove them, maybe cover them with some sort of pvc covers? Could probably be a really nice tank for her. Might want to add a false bottom, otherwise, that may be a lot of substrate to make that rounded bottom flat enough. Please show us the finished product! I really like that she's putting so much thought into her axie's care - the canister, the bar fridge - excellent! ;)

I'd like to toss something into the room about the tub. Axolotls have lateral lines like fish - I hope I used the right word, am thinking in German today  - the sensory organ/nerve that runs down their sides for sensing movement. In a round tub, the reverberation of movement crossing and recrossing through the water could be stressful for them, like in a round fishbowl. Just a thought; anyone else have thoughts about that?

-Eva

Good point (that's the right term - I do believe :) ). Those sides are pretty round. Do you think that would still be a factor in such a large body of water?

Think he could break that up with the use of strategically placed ornaments - like some large driftwood to make it more like a pond environment - would that work?

if the round tub is big enough, like this spa bath is, the reflections are no problem. The main reasons against round tubs are depending on orbicular fish bows, because of the minor gas diffusion and not of irritating the lateral line system.
There are movement reflections in angled tubs, like a normal tank, too.;)

Thanks guys n it's finished(i was ordered to put all the axies in....grrrr) the idea isn't a new one i used this once b4 and as soon as i put the axies in they started breeding two weeks later my daughter(hannah) was still in nappies then but i spouse looking through the pic albums she's seen it and loved it i didn't take the jets out and couldn't use them(well wasn't allowed) for the filtration system in case they get sick from chemicals and that as she said So we got the tank sticky stuff from the shed and covered them over I'll be posting some pics very shortly....... she's using a sand substrate atm with a few natural pieces of slate and rock .And still looking for a better substrate to mimic there natural habitat.whats funny about it all is that she has set it up in our kitchen ( makes making coffee hard with out a lot and a bit startling when they come up for air and make that clicking gasping sound lol)
