hi i went to a local pond a few days ago and was shocked to see that the whole pond was nearly dried up, there was a bit of water left in there and one thing i was supprised to see was aroung 150 great crested newt larve moving around in the dried up pond i saw quite a few dead ones i no that it is illegal to toutch them but i couldnt just let them die there as this was a large population of larve hear so i ran to the part where there was water and filled a container up with water and picked handfulls of them and put them in the part which had water hear are some pictures:

Re: newt larve

You did the right thing. I don't think anyone would fault you Sean.

Re: newt larve

I agree with john, what is happening with the larvae now?

Re: newt larve

Ya I agree too, sometimes laws are not always benificial to the animal, like in this instance. You did the right thing.

there was a bit of water left in the pond but it was about 2foot long by 1 foot wide but it was really deep. if it had been any outher type of newt i would have relocated them but as they are GCN i cannot really do much as you are not ment to toutch them.

thanks

So are you just going to keep them yourself until you know what's next? are they still in your captivity?
Maybe contact natural England? They might have some guidance for you.

No I only put them in a container for a few mins and put them in a small part of water which was left, but I am thinking as it is really hot weather today they rest may dry up. and a large population die.

Its due to rain tomorrow..lots!! If it doesn't may be contact the relevant authorities and let them know..but I suspect you should really let nature take its own course here, hard as it may be.

They are pretty large now - they might transform soon. In any case Bella is right - leave them be now. You don't need a run in with the law.

yer i am i am not going to go back there this year the bit of water i put tem back in was really deep and as you said they are quite large.
