I just bought 2 Spanish Ribbed Newts and at the pet store they didn't know the genders of them. When I got home and opened the container the smaller of the two had latched on to the larger one's front legs and hasn't let go. They appear to be mating, what should I do about this?

There now appears to be a couple of white dots attached by a string like thing on a rock. Could these be eggs?

Kinda sounds like eggs. We will know for sure if you post a picture

The things I thought were eggs are now gone. Here's a picture I got of them

Do you know which is the male and which is the female? I haven't seen them mate since yesterday.

The male should be on the bottom if they're doing it right I believe. And its just a courtship dance, so eggs don't always occur.

Ok, thank you for clarifying. They've been doing it again this morning... I'm just hoping there are no eggs.

It sounds like what you saw was an spermatophore (a sperm packet).
The one being amplexed (that's the name of this grabbing behaviour) looks immature so it may be too soon for eggs. The males will amplex and court readily with very little stimuli, this is a species that needs no excuse to breed.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
