Nightcrawlers producing "mucus"?

So, this may be completely normal, but I don't remember this from fishing when I was younger, so...

Some of the nightcrawlers I've been catching (but not all of them, which is another reason for my curiosity) seem to produce a clear, kind of mucusy coating (it's shiny, like the trails left by snails and slugs on the ground. Exactly.) when picked up or handled in anyway. Are these a different kind of worm? Will it harm my salamander?

This is a defensive mechanism. The secretions of different species are not all the same. It shouldn't harm you salamanders, however, some worms secret foul tasting chemicals. If you salamander is sensitive to this he may reject the worms. That's all.
