I've not been active at all here in a long time but I came across these pics from a trip to WV my son and I went on last year and thought of you guys. No spectacular finds but we did come across some interesting color patterns:

That spotted looks pretty skinny actually. The photos are wonderful though.
 
I don't find many Ambystoma so my perception may be skewed but this guy seemed actually fairly chunky.
 
I think there is a strange angle going on, where you could get the perception that the side of the maculatum is flattened, and skinny. If you look at the overall health of the animal (healthy legs, fat tail, well shaped head) you can tell it is somewhat of a chunk. Great looking spotted for sure, just a strange body position and angle for the picture! Cool shots-
