One Curled Gill?

This ismy first post here, so let me know if I missed something.

I have a young juvenile axolotl (his name is Oberon :p). I got him about a week and a half ago, but I have set up and cycled the tank for about 2 and a half months prior to getting him.

I just noticed today that he has one gill antenna (idk the word for just the one singular branch), is curled over. Should I be worried? I know curled gills is a bad sign, but it is just one branch. I don't know if I should wait for what will happen or go after it now.

Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

Keep watching his gills and general state; some axolotls just have naturally curled/kinked gills. If he's acting erratic in other places, you might want to look into it more, but if it's just the one curled gill, it doesn't seem like something to worry about.
Best of luck with your new axie friend!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
