Finally success! I have caught one of my Cryptophyllobates azureiventris calling. What sweet sound. A combo of a cricket/song bird. Of course I only heard it by accident since I happened to venture into the basement at 1am because I forgot to rinse my blackworms. These guys toss predominately female so I am so happy of my group of five I have at least one male. Time to increase feedings and start putting petridishes in the cocohuts to see if I can get some eggs.

Mine always prefered to lay under the coconut shell that was sitting on a Magnolia leaf. Might be worth giving them a second option if you have the room.

That is a good suggestion. I have the room. I am using magnolia leaves on the floorbed already so it all works out. Just will be fun to try and raise some tads!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
