Hey every one,

i tried to search for this but i didn't find much,

Is there a way to tell if you are over oxygenating your tank?

i have about 50l tank and a airstone that pumps away kinda quick but i do turn it down at night by kinking the air line.

any ideas on this would be great

thanks

Michael

Hi Michael,

Agitation of the water caused by the filter and the air pump is sufficient for gas exchange between the tank and the atmosphere, thereby importing/exporting gases, including oxygen, carbon dioxide, etc.

Jay.

normally its not possible to over-oxygenate your water with the airstone or pump - because the oxygen-content of the water itself is not influenced by both. (generally spoken: warm water has a lower amount of oxygen, cold water has a higher amount)

btw. how many axies are you keeping in your tank? 50L is rather small...

You can not "overoxygenate" your water, at least not within normal parameters (pressure, temperature). The saturation of gases tends towards an equilibrium with surrounding air and you have a maximum saturation capacity of the water.
Thereby adding more air won't get more gas dissolved in the water, it goes out the way it comes in: as a gas.

What may become a problem caused by the airstone is current - if the water moves too fast, this might stress your Axolotls.

thanks for all the replies, and i have 3 axolotls in my tank which is 30X600X37 which is small but they will get a huge one soon :p

thats great news! they will be happy in their bigger home soon!
