Pachytriton A, B, C.....

What does this mean? I always thought that there were only 2 types of Pachytriton. Do the letters represent other Pachytriton species, ones that are unnamed perhaps? Thanks for your help.

Yes, A,B, and C are just terms for undescribed species of Pachytriton that have shown up through the pet trade.

Do they have scientific names? Is there anything beyond C?

Nothing beyond C that I know of. They do not have scientific names and have not been officially described yet because they are from the pet trade and don't have proper locality data.

Hi,

if you're interested in Pachytriton "C", contact Henk Wallays (he's on the kingsnake.com newt board regularly), I think he's the guy who bred them. The metamorphosed youngsters of P."C" are looking like Paramesotriton, not like Pachytriton.

The synonym "C" was given by Burkhard Thiesmeier, chairman of the German workgroup Urodela.

Speaking of Dr Burkhard Thiesmeier, he has a nice photo of Pachytriton "A" with eggs on the cover of the DGHT Urodela Workgroup home page. There are also some nice Pachytriton photos on the species info pages. If your German is not too great, just look at the photos (or you could try systran systran on it).

I have only really seen pics of type C, but never a full pic of A or B, anybody have any pics of those. The picture from above doesn't show everything, but it is cool to see the female guarding her eggs!
