Pale Gills

Ok, I think I'm over reacting but one of my axies has pale gills (its a white btw) but other than that is in cracking health. His tank mate of the same stock has nice red gills, is anything wrong or is it just their variety?
I was also forced to handle one of them, should I put in anything to help keep their skin clean?

Their gills will be pale when they're inactive. You may notice them get brighter (as well as the body get pinker) when you feed or they're annoying each other.

If you kept the handling to a minimum, then I wouldn't worry about it. I handle mine when necessary (usually when moving from one tub to another. I've found the net to be more of a hassle and more stressful than just scooping them by hand).

Have you cycled your tank?

I've been cycling the tank for a while now... Without knowing it... We treat the tropical fish in the same way. Though could you please put the process in simpleton terms for me please as I'm still finding it a little confusing, I want to make sure I'm spot on, just incase.
I've also been using products to keep ammonia low, keep the heavy metals and chlorines safe ad encourage good bacteria in the filter, both products said they were safe for all plants and animals. Am I doing right?
(and yeah, she does pink up slightly when she 'awake' and hunting, but she's still so pale...)
Thank you for all your help!

Sara just spotted this now.

You shouldn't add any products to keep ammonia low, just let your tank cycle. I've posted a picture on your other thread of one of my white gilled axies, as they were back in Jan.

Also, have you read this link on cycling: http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/cyclingEDK.shtml

"Cycling is establishing an active “biological filter” consisting of beneficial/good bacteria that break down nitrogenous aquatic animal wastes"

Thanks so much for that! I think I've got it all clear now!
