I have noticed from the gallery pics that quite a lot of axolotl keepers use large pebbles (larger than axolotls head) as their choice for substrate.Currently I am using sand with a small scattering of large round pebbles, but am finding that the sand seems to dirty quickly even though i carry out cleanups throughout the day. I am considering using just large pebbles as stated above as substrate and was wondering how other keepers manage to do their cleanups, considering muck does tend to settle on the bottom in between the rocks. Do you have to move the rocks around all the time?
