So what exactly are the requirements for pellets? I know they're supposed to be soft, and they need a lot of protein, and not a lot of fat. But how much of each? How do you choose the right pellets for axolotls? Dad wants to take me to the pet store in a few days, and if we can't find red wrigglers, we'll have to try and find pellets.

(Tabi has been fed chopped up nightcrawlers that were small to begin with, but now all I have left are my colossal ones. Even if I shred them up, they have too much girth for him to handle.)

Back when my axolotl didn't want to eat earthworms I wondered the same thing. Looking at most of the commonly recommended brands, protein is usually around 45% and fat is usually around 15%. I would make sure the first few ingredients are meat based and that it doesn't have a lot of plant based stuff like alfalfa, corn meal, etc. Earthworms are still the best though. And haha, nightcrawlers can get huge! I've gotten worms that had so much girth even my adult axolotl struggled a bit :p This might be kind of gross and messy but could you try cutting the worms longways? I've never done it but it might work if you're in a pinch. Most carnivore pellets should be fine though if your axolotl is only eating them every now and then.

The Rangen soft salmon pellets are fed to axies in labs and also by many owners. Mine ate them at first, but after having night crawlers, it's like offering a cracker and he won't heat them anymore. Good thing worms are nutritionally whole, because that's all mine will eat.

Tabi doesn't show much interest in worms cut long ways ;-;
I found a small worm and put that in the bowl for him... Do axolotls sometimes willingly fast themselves???
