Pink pond

Well while walking through the woods I came across a site rather un-earthly

.

Upon closer investigation I discovered that this pond was so violently magenta because of the floating plants in it.

Does any one know what these are, and if they can be used with newts?

It's an invasive non-indigenous free floating aquatic fern from the genus Azolla.
It's quite harmless to newts in captivity, but as your image shows it chokes all native plants and eventually kills all life in the pond.
