So upon waking up this morning and checking my axolotl tank, I found that my female had laid a clutch of eggs, which in and of itself isn’t out of the ordinary, but my male, Hypno, had what appeared to be a piece of an aquarium plant stuck in his cloaca. I tried to get a closer look and potentially pull it out, but he wouldn’t hold still and I didn’t want to force it, out of fear of hurting him. He’s still moving and acting normally, but his testicles are very swollen and the plant won’t come out. There is a vet in my town that treats exotic animals, but I don’t know if they’ll know how to treat an axolotl. I really have no idea what to do here, I’m afraid if I try to remove the plant ill accidentally hurt him, but if left untreated I fear that it will cause serious problems. Please help me!

I would tub him, offer him food, and check how he is pooping. Hopefully he can dislodge is during a poop. Otherwise, I'd go to a vet for advice and help.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
