Plants for newt home

i have to Notophthalmus viridescens newts. i just purchased a new home for them, a 5 1/2 gallon aquarium. i sealed off part of the tank to put dirt and plants. what kind of plants should i put in the dirt side? also is there any type of aquatic plants do newts enjoy.

From what I've seen in their natural habitat they usually go for areas with very light vegitation, a couple patches of aquatic grass that isn't too dense. I've seen them in ponds infested with a thick coat of duck weed, but I wouldn't go that route if I were you.
