Does anyone know if the plants: Java Fern, Cryptocorene costata, vallisneria caulescens, echinodorus red rubin and wisteria are poisonous to axies? Or even any site where I can check which plants are toxic?

Thanks,

Amira

None of the commonly available aquatic plants pose any danger for your axie. The biggest problem with them is that the axie will uproot them and re-arrange them.

hey

every one says they uproot them but mine have never but its up to you ?

Amiracle,

Another problem with keeping plants is that they obviously require light for photosynthesis (their means of survival) but axolotls don't particularly favour the light- quite the conflict. The best plants for an axolotl would be Java moss or Java fern because they don't require that much light to thrive. However, light itself poses another problem- it will produce heat; this is will invariably heat up your tank. This is the last thing that you want seeing as you live in Australia. If you are going to purchase a light source, I would recommend a fluorescent bulb because it is a form of luminescence, which essentially is 'light without heat'. It would also be a good idea to find out what wavelengths of light Java moss/fern absorb the most. For instance, algae will absorb wavelengths of light around the 450nm (nanometers) mark but of course nobody wants algae in their tank! :p Also keep in mind that plants require nutrients as well, so they will compete with beneficial bacteria for the minerals and nutrients.

I don't keep plants in my tank, but in the end the choice is entirely yours ;)

Jay.
