Hi There

I have 2 fire belly newts who have done well for a long time. I noticed today that one is severely swollen. I dont think gravid.
Please see the pictures. Also, any treatment suggestions?

Hi!
At first, you should set it on isolation in case it's some kind of decease that can spread to the other ones. I suggest a small box with lid (remember ventilation holes) and clean water you change every day. If you put it in cool (if your family don't mind it being in the refridgerator..) it could be beneficial. Can you get to a vet who has knowledge about salamanders and newts?
I can't tell you about treatments but keep it cool and clean while you search for more help! Have you checked your water parameters & temperature, is everything allright there? Here's a link on Caudata Culture's article on bloat. There are other articles on treatments, there, too, and if you search "bloat" here you might find some good information.
I hope all the best for the little patient!

Hi There.

Thank you so much for replying. I will isolate it today. I have plenty of spare tanks I can put her in. Our fridge temp here runs at about 46F (8C). I am not too sure if this will be too cold.
Unfortunately where I live, there are no vets that specialize in exotic animals. I do have over 60 species of fish so plenty of (Fish related) medicine. I am not sure if any of this would be good for the newt as I know how sensitive they can be.
I have searched around on the site about bloat but none of the results look good.

I will have a look at the article you sent me.

Water perimeters and temp is spot on. I am so worried about her.

How did they get on, did you manage to help them?
