Possible morphing?

My axolotl started shedding his slime layer around mid May and is showing signs that he is morphing. Does anyone have any insight about this? All tank conditions that the API master test kit can test for are fine.

The first image was from April. The rest of the images are from within the last week.

These images are from early June and late June respectively. I did not take any pictures in the month of July at all for some reason.

Yes that looks a morphing axolotl

They shouldnt morph unless temp and water quality are not ideal over long periods then they can morph to try and survive.
What are your actual parameters? did you cycle the tank/filter?

give him rocks to get up out of the water - if he is using this almost all the time its time to make a terrestrial set up

The tank was cycled prior to receiving the axolotl (Janurary 2020) . It did crash once when I added sand (March 2020) but was resolved in about a week (while axolotl was tubbed).

Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: ~30
pH: 7.8
*Temp: 70

I also add a tiny bit of Holtfreter's solution with every water change (30% a week) to make up for soft water... I do not have a KH or GH testing kit.

My axolotl is currently in a tub with low water with some cholla wood in there to help him get out of the water as needed. Adding some rocks would help create a more consistent increase in elevation though, thanks for the suggestion!

Holtfreters is awesome but most effective at 40-50%
Temp is above ideal range 68 being the top end for axolotls.

even upside down new terra cotta sauce works

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
