Hi all!

I have a healthy 5 year old wild type axolotl in a 50 gallon unplanted tank. My sister added a 2.5 gallon jug of spring water to top up the water level last night and I realized this morning. I am concerned because the jug she used had been sitting outside with temperatures around 100 degrees this week. I am not sure if I should be concerned because I know that it’s probably not unusual for containers to reach these temperatures during shipping before even making it onto the shelves at the store.

I’m planning to do a water change but I was wondering if anyone had any info about potential contamination of the water from the plastic container? I’ve been looking online but aside from the general warnings about plastic leaching and a few studies about reproductive harm I can’t get any good information to guide my response. Any thoughts on how aggressive to be in mitigating any potential contamination would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

some of the information regarding axolotls and plastic derives from one of the articles in the axolotl newsletter (can't remember which one as it has been a while since I read through them), in the article it expresses concern due to the type of bacteria that grows on the plastic as it starts to rot the axolotls feet and limbs whilst preventing natural regrowth, there doesn't seem to be any information as to whether the bacteria feeds on the petrochemicals or other base materials of the plastics or whether it is a natural bacteria that is formed in axolotl enclosures but is able to latch into the microscopic grooves and indentations in plastics and therefore surviving the cleaning process.
