Hey there, so over the last week or so I started to notice white spots on my axolotl and today I noticed one of two on his gills and I was wondering if this could potentially be a fungus infection? I’m quite conflicted as his behaviour hasn’t changed in anyway and he is still eating and moving around normally. I’ve attached what pictures I was able to take as it was quite difficult as he likes to swim around a lot.

They get spots like that as they grow. As long as the spots arent like tiny little fluffy clouds hanging on the skin.

That’s good to hear, thank you! They don’t particularly look like pictures of other sick axolotls, and as I said his behaviour hasn’t really changed he’s just more active and he’s still eating normally I just wanted to double check and make sure he’s fine

Those are probably just iridosphores. Your axolotl is a wildtype, I believe. They can develop shiny patches as they grow, which sometimes appear white in color. It would be easier to confirm that they are iridosphores if we could see a picture of his eyes. It's ok if you can't get a picture, just look at his eyes and see if there is a lighter-colored or shiny ring around it. The spots don't look like anything alarming, but it might be good to keep an eye on it if you still aren't sure. :) Best wishes for your little guy!

Hi there! Thank you so much! He is my first axolotl so I’m still learning, I didn’t think it was anything to worry about because as I said he’s still his normal mischievous self and eating normally. I did manage to get a picture of the one side of his face but they look the same :)

No problem! To me, it just looks like those are iridosphores and/or just lighter patches. Your axolotl does have the ring around his eye, which means that shiny patches may or may not develop as he grows. Let me know if you need anything else :)

I dont see any need for concern with the spot, however that gravel is a HUGE no-no and needs to be removed immediately. Axololts can and will eat just about anything smaller than their heads, gravel included. That would be fatal for your axolotl. The only appropriate substrates for axolotls are super find sand or large tiles. Bare bottom tanks are also a popular option.
