Hi

I have rescued some axis, they're about a year old. I have been told they will need a bigger tank in 6 months or so. I did not have to cycle the water initially, as the tank was provided by the rescue centre all cycled and ready to go.

How do I prep a bigger 125l tank? Is it a normal 2 month cycle? Can I use the water from my current 60l tank?

Is it worth buying a bigger tank now and getting it ready?

Thank you so much!

I hope this isn't bad advice, but so long as you move the filter and most/all of the water into the new tank you shouldn't have problems. It would be equivalent to a 50% water change. You could even use the larger tank 50% full for a while if you wanted to. So I would just go for it one day, put your axolotl in a container, move all your water (and the filter!!!) to the new tank, and set them free in their new larger home.

The water hold none of the "cycle". The filter will only partially help as it will be too small so you will need to cycle a bigger one anyways.

You can speed up cycling with a heater and nitrifying bacteria but you have to be vigilant with testing, dosing and only water changing when you hit a stall.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
