Hello, been a while since i’ve been on here, i just keep dragonfly larvae now, great pets, I do miss amphibia tho... I recently was united with a Bufo bufo, who i am accommodating for a year perhaps. I have been feeding him only earthworms but wondered if he might be missing out on any nutrients? Slugs are hard to feed to him as they dont move much. He potentially gets an array of insects in the wild. Should I vitamin dust the worms? Is there any other live feeds that will compliment the earth worms?

Well, it is not so hard to feed a Bufo, regardless of species. Basically if it fits in the mouth its good enough :)
You can try any crickets, feeder roach, even baby mice (but only from time to time).

well no, a ball bearing fits in its mouth, but i won’t feed it that.
And i don’t think they eat many baby mice in the wild.

I keep a Bufo fowleri and primarily feed it earthworms and caterpillars I find in my garden (I do not spray pesticides/herbicides). There are a few woodlice in his enclosure as well which he snacks on. Worms are a pretty complete diet, supplementing with other insects is not a bad idea though. Woodlice are pretty much everywhere and breed readily in most tanks. If your Bufo is big enough to eat one the occasional pinky mouse is fine. I would advise against waxworms though, myself and others on this forum have had deaths attributed to "bad batches". Not worth the risk in my opinion.

Thanks Perry, so no benefit in using vitamin powder to dust the worms? I will start offering him woodlice too.

Lol, i have seen these guys eating old dogfood i put out on the lawn for the birds, i dont think they are too fussy about what they eat, though i cant say that dog food is part of a balanced diet.

Well I've seen these toads in a friends house approaching fresh dog snacks and start eating them like there was no tomorrow. And the dogs were there feeding before... Yes they were... Cause they left when the toads came. One of the most spectacular things I've witnessed... Oh btw, he has a yard filled with healthy and perfect vegetables growing. No snails, slugs or anything else rotting the crops. I'm pretty sure they're the world's best insecticides out there...
If you thing a Bufo bufo its a picky eater, well you might be thinking wrong...
Cheers,

My garden is full of toads, i grow beans and tomatoes and have no problems with slugs, snails, caterpillars etc i have never contemplated insecticides or slug pellets as the toads wipe them all out.
