Hello everyone.

I just recently bought a 55 gallon high tank that I plan on having two axolotls in. I won't be getting the axies for several months because I want to spend time researching and prepping my tank for them (I'd like to get them right after new years) but I had a few questions on getting two axolotls.

1.) I don't know the best way to go about getting two axolotls. On one end I'd like to get them both at the same time, but if I get them as juvies I won't know if they are male or female. When they get older and if they are different sexes I will need to separate or possibly even depart with one of them because I do not want to breed since I have 0 experience and no other tank. I was thinking I could start off with one axolotl and then once I know its sex I can look around for another the same sex and size, but that sounds like it might be a little hard. Any thoughts?

2.) Also for my tank I would like to have a golden albino and a wild type because I like their coloration. However I've read that wild types can be more aggressive, especially towards color mutated axies. Is this true? Would a 55 gallon be enough room for them to have space so that is least likely to happen? I was thinking melanoid could work too but I'd rather have a wild type if at all possible.

3.) Are there any tips or rules I should know about keeping two together? I know that if they are well fed they shouldn't be biting one another, and they will need space to move around and hide. Any thing I'm missing?

Thanks for reading, I want to know as much as possible about these guys before I get them.

1. You could get two now and if they turn out to be opposite sex then you could place a divider in the tank. Alternatively, you could look around in the for sale section for an adult axolotl once you know what sex your first one is.

2. I have a golden albino and a wild type and they get along just fine. I have seen no aggression from the wild type and have had them since they were roughly 3 inches. Your tank should be fine for two axolotls. Just make sure there are a couple of hides.

3. I don't think you are missing anything really. As above, your tank should be fine and have a couple of hides for them to choose. Keep them well fed but don't over feed them. One thing I like to do just to prevent accidental nipping is to try and feed each of them a little bit away from each other.

I think I will get the one and then the second one once I can sex the first one. Axolotls typically start showing signs of sexual maturity around 6 months correct?

Can I post a thread in the for sale section or is that only for selling things? Sorry still new to this forum haha.

I wouldn't like to sex a six month old. My 8 month old "male" surprised me with eggs!!

You can post in the wanted section when the time is right for you.

Go for the colours you like.......you can't really predict personality by colour.....I have had all sorts of friendly, cute, shy, bold, snappy in every colour way possible, and wouldn't say any one colour had any particular trait
I read a scientific article that dark types tend to be healthier as the immune systems of albinos of the species is less vigorous than that of the others but I think this was more relevant to hatchlings and babies.

I suppose I could get two adults that I already know the sex of. The way I want to aqua scape my tank will make having a divider hard. I could also get the one and wait to get the second one, but waiting 8 or 9 months (assuming I get them very young) might be too long, I'd really like to have two since it's a bigger tank. Also I'd like to get them while it's cold outside so I dont risk them getting over heated. I plan on getting the first one right around new years because I'll have the money from student loans, so that gives me about 2 more months of cold weather to find another one, assuming I have to ship them.

I could possibly come up with another layout for my tank but the one I'm planning now will look amazing when it's all done!

I was pretty sure that color and temperament had no correlation but I wanted to check since I have read a few places that wild types are more aggressive. I'm glad that doesn't appear to be true. :)

So I might put a slight dampener on things... My golden albino was suspiciously female but then when she was over a year old, she became a he... They can surprise you.

That does dampen things a bit haha. I guess I'll just have to be careful and get a divider just in case then. I dont know what I'd do if they laid eggs. O.O I still really want two of them. If I suspect they are opposite sex then I will divide them for a period of time until I'm positive what they are. If they are opposite sex then I could just keep them separate. That will mess up my plans for aqua scaping but I can always come up with another design I guess.
