New Jersey needs more rain. Turned over a log while fishing today and found a late stage red eft that was severely dehydrated and so skinny I could see it's ribs. The soil it was in was bone dry.

Seemed to be moving around better once I gave him a little dip in the lake, but considering the poor condition it was in I decided to take it home and try to nurture it back to health. I'm thinking adequate moisture and some chopped earthworms should do the trick.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Once a newt has been taken from the wild into captivity it shouldn't be released back. There would be a chance of introducing a foreign pathogen into the local habitat.

Agreed. I can see how my initial post read that way. I wasn't planning on releasing it back. Just looking for tips to help it get well during its quarantine time before he joins my other newts.

I think the moisture and chopped earth worms would be perfect for the little guy. Maybe provide lots of hides but you seem experienced enough to take care of it!
