Red light

Due to the difficulty of monitoring my Salamandra, who are now exhibiting their secretive natural behaviour in my new(ish) setup:

last night I set up a 25W red bulb 6 feet away from the tank. The sals did not react at all to this and went about their normal nocturnal business. Once my eyes had adapted, I had a superb view of their activities.
I was surprised at the degree of aggression from the males, although no damage was done, they were more intent on putting others (subdominant males and females) in their place than on eating.
Fascinating.

Youve found a trick of mine there Alan.
I have found that all my nocturnal amphibs get used to a dull yellow or red light at night very quickly.
I have spent many a pleasurable hour sat in the middle of my newt room watching the night time anctics of salamanders and toads.
