Hello all,

I went on a camping and white water rafting trip over the weekend in Ohiopyle Pennsylvania on the Lower Youghiogheny River. It was a blast!! After the white water trip we all relaxed and then some of us went down to this pond at night to see what we could spot. We found a ton of Spring Peepers, bullfrogs, newts, bugs and a few young blue gill hanging out near the bank. I also found a Spotted Salamander while going down the river but the pic was taken with another guys camera since it was water proof. Ill see if I cant post it after he sends the pics to me.

Here are pics of one of the bullfrogs and one of the newts. My guess is the newt is a female and either she is eating well or gravid. She had quite the full belly on her unlike the others we saw.

Hope you guys enjoy!!!

That's an unusually patterned bullfrog. It looks quite a bit like a crayfish frog, Rana areolata. It would be pretty... if it weren't a bullfrog.

When I saw the title (Red spotted newt and American bullfrog), I was afraid this was going to be the worst species mixing disaster thread of all time! Happily, it's a nice set of photos from the wild. I haven't seen a RSN with that pattern before, with just a few BIG red spots. Thanks for posting!

I thought it had an unusual pattern myself but I did find a few images on google that showed ones like this. Most of the ones we saw but didnt catch for pics had the typical bullfrog patterns and green faces. According to what I found the Rana areolatas range does not consist of Pennsylvania.

Keeping chameleons for some time I know not to intermix different species of reptiles or amphibians. Heck, you cant even keep more than one of the same species to an enclosure!!! I keep chameleons and that is it. My amphibian hobby goes as far as going out and finding them in the wild although I would like to get some type of newts down the road. Too much money goes into the chameleon hobby though:(

:blob: wowsa! Now that's One Phat Phrog!! :frog:

Not even close, or I would think interbreeding. She's a pretty frog, regardless of the species' eating habits.

Most of the female bullfrogs in CA I've found have very similar coloration, seems pretty normal to me.
