Hello. I just went out and bought a aquatic plant for my fire belly newt. I believe its a elodia. It however came with a snail wich is maybe a little under and inch. Its black. Is it okay to put it in the tank with my newt ? If not what should I do with it ? If I am able to keep it in the tank is there anything special I have to do to keep it alive ? i.e. Feeding and what not ? Thanks

snails wont harm your newts but they might reproduce so fast, even if you only have one, taht can cause some majr changes in your tank

Some snails have taken lives of axies and limbs from newts on the species disaster list but many were Apple Snails.

I find that if you just leave all of the snails alone, and allow them to reproduce, they reproduce too quickly and the population crashes because the demand is greater than the food supply. eventually it evens out. I had about 45 small snails in my 10 gallon tank, and a week later i was down to 10. besides they help keep my tank cleaner so I like them.

ps. be sure to find all of the decomposing little snails and remove them, or do several water changes weekly once they disappear. If you leave the shells in the water, it helps as a pH buffer.
