Regular vs. intermitent feeding?

I know that it's larger than its siblings because my grand uncle's keeping a few and they're only 10 cm. Well I didn't know caudates over ate that much, all of my newts eat until they get full and then it stops, I thought axies would be the same. I also heard that when an animal (aquatic) reaches the size that's on the verge or just beyond it's aquarium's carrying capacity (recycling of wastes) it stops growing .

That's a myth: an animal will not stop growing when the tank becomes too small. How big is the tank (lenght and width in inches or cm)?

I guess the reason why it's a myth is because I heard it at a pet store. The aquarium's about 20 inches long 12 inches wide and 13 inches tall, but this is just off the top of my head.

a 10gal, by sounds of it. Yeah, get a turkey baster. I use mine daily. Letting poo sit in the tank is seriously unhealthy. Would you poo in your bedroom and just let it sit there and pile up? Do you test your water? If not, I suggest doing so.

Yeah, I wouldn't want poop in my bedroom, I'll have to get the baster I'm sure it would be easy, no I do not test my water, but now I think it's about time I started.

I have a question along the same lines.. I see people mentioning that they feed their axies 10 pellets or more at a time. My axolotl is about 12 cm long, and I feed him normal trout pellets, one each a couple times a day. Is this too little food? He seems to be growing at normal pace.

Hey guy's just a quick question, what does Axie poop look like? I can't tell the poop from the rocks at the moment!

Small, brown, and kind of cylindrical. After a while it falls apart into dust.

Lauren, welcome to the group. If your axie and you are comfortable that's ok. You can read above for typical regimes.

If it were me, I would try a little bit more. But small meals often is a good habit too.

Ben, you can get a turkey baster from Morrisons for a couple of quid.

Lauren, I'm with Mikki, you sould probably feed it a bit more. But feeding it every day is something I try to shy away from, as then if I need to leave for a few days, they get stressed from not having food every day.

I'm surprised you guys are telling Lauren to feed it more. Did you notice she is feeding it a couple of times per day? If she feeds it more, she should also feed it less often I think.

Also, the number of pellets is meaningless unless you know how large the pellets are. I've seen some pretty large sized trout pellets.

mmm ... a little bit of common sense should help to define what's enough and what's too much.

I'm giving them about 1 mouthful every 2nd day and they seem to be doing all right.

Twice a day is definitely too much ... that is, unless the portions are real small ....

so much for my 5 cents ;)

Jen, she's feeding 1 pellet a few times a day. But you're right, it depends on how big the pellets are. I'll defer this one to people who use pellets.

Jen,

Pellets I use are very small...1mm dia by 2mm long. 10 a day is about right I find. These are same size one on the illustration on cover of Peter Scotts book.

You are right other pellets can be different size, up to 8mm are readily available. and there are 10mm and 12mm avialable too & bollies. Now if Lauren is feeding these larger ones then a couple a day would certainly be ample in my view.

Oops, should have clarified the size in the earlier part of the discussion. Sorry if any confusion there Lauren, made an assumption.

However, as I always say you must carry on as you feel comfortable and from what your own direct observations tell you. My second 'as always' rider is don't forget variety.

Thanks for note there Jen.

Well I got a baster today and it worked well. I might get a new filter and some water testing kits as well. If I redo the aquarium I'll have some cobbles with fine gravel underneath them and some sort of under gravel filter.

I don't have a sponge filter, I just read the article on filters in caudata culture and it turns out I have a submersible filter (rena is the make), it filters using a sponge so I assumed it was a sponge filter. Is this good enough for an axie?

Thanks Mikki, Kaysie, and Jenn,

I didn't realise the pellets came in different sizes. Mine are about 4mm by 4 mm. It seemed like that was big enough for his mouth, since he's 12 cm. So is this enough or too much?
