My axi has become really fat over the past month. This came on very suddenly and I thought at first maybe eggs but its been to long. Anyone ever have renal failure in their axi?

I haven't personally, but this needs to be treated by the vets like we suggested in your other thread, and most probably euthanized
:( if it's organ failure she will return to being the massive fluid-filled axolotl with a very poor quality of life.. I'm sorry.

You already asked this question here, why are you asking again?
The advice is the same - go see a vet - CJ has even found a couple of options for you.

I did go to the vet already she thought eggs. But unless they hold them for a month she was wrong. I'm new to this site so I'm sorry if I posted more than once. I was looking for help on here because we'll I thought with such a large group of people u may have some useful information.

Unfortunately you did not say in either of your posts that you had consulted a vet so it reads as though you have asked a question, been given advice, ignored it, then asked the same question again - epic bugbear of most forum members.

Was the vet you saw an exotics specialist? Sadly most 'general' vets know less about Axolotls than I do about the eating habits of the lesser spotted unicorn. If any of the vets I posted a link to is near you I would suggest you contact them forthwith, failing that hit Google, I just Googled (other search engines are available) Exotic vets, Orchard Park USA and those hits came up, there appears to be several Orchard Parks in the USA though so being as you know which one you actually live in and I don't I'm sure your search can be a bit more precise! ;)

CJ is right, we see people asking a question, not liking the answer, so they post again. Gets very annoying sometimes. You can be assured that most axie people here check all the sections when they drop in, and a moderator will soon move your post if it's in the wrong place and not getting replies.

The vet you spoke to IS wrong, and you may be right about kidney failure (or liver, or heart for that matter) or it could be a systemic infection, but it's not something you can deal with on your own. You really need to find a vet who knows something about amphibians, a simple blood test will be able to identify the problem and tell you if it's treatable or not. Unfortunately you may need to prepare yourself for the possibility that your axie is too poorly and might not survive, or will have to be euthanised.

She is an exotic vet and has only ever seen 1 other axilotl. Apparently they are not normally pets where I live. I will try the other bet that you posted and see what they say. I will ask for the blood test and hope for the best thanks for your info I really appreciate it.

I wish we could collectively stop giving bad reputation to new members seeking help. It's a new trend I've witnessed and I'd hate to have it discourage someone from returning here for help in the future.

Take your personal judgment to any other sub-forum here, this one is far too important for that.

Well I have another appt for tomorrow at 5 hoping all goes well. Ill post after she still is acting ok and eating everyday so I'm hoping for the best. Thanks for the advice.

I took her to the vet and she thinks maybe a possible infection that led to her filling with fluid. So now I give her 2 shots a day for ten days 1 is antibiotic and the other is diaretic. It's been 3 days and no improvement so far. Has anyone ever done this before?

Just give it a chance and keep giving her the shots,
Just like us when we have flu or we are sick, if we are put on medication for a few days (example 10 days), we would only start feeling better after the 5th/6th day. Its natural because the body needs to heal and fight the infection or bacteria. So i assume that it would take a similar time frame to your Axies :)

Be patient and give it a chance :) they know what they're doing :)

You are less than a third of the way through a course of treatment for what would appear to be quite a serious infection. It will take time for the medication to work. Be patient and don't lose hope.

I've seen other threads with a similar diagnosis state a week of treatment before any visual differences were noticed. I would be quite relieved it wasn't renal failure as it usually comes with a negative outlook.

Yes me too I'm hoping for the best I don't want to lose her. Thanks for the info from everyone.

Ok so it's been about a week since the shots have been completed. She is still very big and still eating and seems happy. I can't seem to get the vet to call or email me with the next step on what to do. I don't believe that she has ever really treated an axilotl with this condition before. So I'm asking if anyone has any advise she is only getting bigger. She unfortunately probably needs to be euthanized but I don't know how or if I even have the heart to do it. I'm at a loss any advise would be great.

There's only so much we can do, we are only hobbyists and not vets I don't believe any home remedies can work. It's unfortunate but the vets your only help :(

A hypertonic holtfreter's solution might help with the fluid retention. Though I would wait for others with more experience to weigh in.

I agree with Elise, also did the vet try drawing off some of the fluid?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
