Hi there.
It has been many years since I kept and bred newts. I was brought up in the UK, and I believe I was one of the first people in Scotland to have been granted a license to breed Triturus Cristatus. I was involved in a project to reintroduce them to a restored wetland.
I subsequently lived in Portugal, then Turkey. In Portugal, I was able to familiarise myself with the native species, but didn't find anyone to share my interest in amphibians. I became more interested in taking photos of newts out in the wild, rather than disturbing them. I may be able to find and post these photos (if anyone is interested, and if I can find them.)
However, in Turkey, there was a lot more interest, and native newts were on sale in many pet and aquarium fish stores. Banded newts were the main source of interest.
After a break away from amphibians, I now find myself retired, with plenty of time on my hands. I am currently negotiating to purchase a four foot aquarium, and am wondering what I can keep in it.
From what I read, it is now not "kosher" to take individuals from the wild. Back in the day (25 years ago), there was a brisk trade in captive bred individuals. I suspect it is the same today. Can anyone tell me what is available for someone just starting up again?
Thanks.
Bob.
