Hello, can someone identify this species of newt or salamander? It's living with a relative, but it's living in a critter carrier with a wet sponge and shirt over it to keep humidity. Please help, this poor guy is breaking my heart. I want to try to help it, but I can't figure out what species it is.

This is possibly an eastern spotted newts. Any pics from the side?

Was it wild caught?

Yeah, it was wild caught. It's sad, but there's nothing I can do for it, so it will probably die from a disease it already had or a disease it gets from the wild bugs It's being fed or just straight neglect. It's a frustrating situation. 😑

That's really too bad, because that species is hard to breed in captivity.

Are there any particular reasons you think it's in bad shape?

I was told it was thin and I know the relative is pretty neglectful

I'm sorry to hear that. Try steering him toward this forum and Facebook groups. Try introducing good husbandry tips through positive conversation instead of focusing on the negative. I'm not saying that you are focusing on the negative when you talk to him; I'm just making broad statements about how to change people's behavior.

It's easy to raise flightless fruit flies or bean beetles for newts. Many adult eastern newts can also be kept in an aquatic setup with some logs, islands and land to haul out on.

Good luck.

you got a cooler :D Thats so cool! i normally chill their water down if it gets too warm with clean dechlorinated water when they were in their bigger tanks. i'll need to get one that can work with two tanks at some point. or find them for cheap and get two quiet ones. since im in an apartment.
