Question: Salamanders for students?

Hi,

Soon i shall be living the life of a student! I plan to keep a pet at my new home. So i was wandering what sort of caudate (or general exotic pet!) would be good for a student? Meaning i need an animal that requires very little room , very little mantienance and is cheap to feed. I am considering a plethodon cinereus or a small ambystoma (maculatum or opacum perhaps). Also i am from the UK so the species would need to be obtainable here.

Any ideas ?

Hi lazymut,
I have a good suggestion for you. Got there in the UK shops that sell the net newts. It's a research question! For only a newt food you will not spend much money, just buy a pallet of frozen mosquito larvae, which lasts an internal, live food and how you can start a culture of earthworms, for example! :rofl:
Do not forget to carefully study what the necessities of the animal before you buy!

Hey, I'm junior in college now, and I'm planning on getting a firebelly newt, because they're one of the smallest fully aquatic newts that seem relativly hardy. I havn't had any experience with them yet, but I've done some research. Alpine newts also seem like a nice choice, but they were a bit harder for me to find, so i think I'm gonna stick to firebellies. Another suggestion that isn't exactly newt related is a dwarf puffer fish. it's a freshwater puffer that will be quite happy with a ten gallon tank. It's what I had freshmen-beginning of junior year until I bought a new canister filter for a planted tank upgrade that had some stagnant water in the impellor region I didn't know about and unfortunately caused me to lose my puffer.
