I spent Saturday in the Alps around NE Italy, at around 1700m asl. The weather was foggy, cool and humid. I came across a single adult S. atra walking alongside the track. Unfortunately, as I wasn't expecting to find amphibians out in the daylight (and my camera is heavy...) I had to take photos with my girlfriend's phone camera. On loading them to the computer it transpired that the camera had focussed on the background rather than the salamander....you can still see enough to warrant posting them though.
It was very exciting as this is a species I have always wanted to see!
Am I right in thinking that this species is locally common but it's populations are quite sparsely distributed?
