Sand with Gravel, Rocks and plants.

I was wondering if you can put sand under large gravel to support plants. I know it is possible but I want to know if I need to clean the sand if it is under the gravel. And are rocks from a river ok if i boiled them for 20 minutes. And also what plants are good for japanese firebellies

that sounds fine, you shouldn't really clean the sand anyway if you are going to put gravel on top. ive had success with hornwort and "java moss" it is basically java moss but it just started growing in my tank so it is probably a native similar species. but it thrives.
