i just caught one of my young axoltol's scratchin its gills like a dog? has antyone ever seen this beofre, if so what could it be

Yeah, one of mine does this. I'm not sure what it is though.

its all a bit weird, and there isnt anything on its gills either no fungus no nothing, think mabey to unknot its gills, they are pretty stingy, mabey they get knots, i dunno

Matthew - l just read a thread two seconds ago where Sharn mentioned she's heard that really high ammonia levels or parasites irritating the gills can make the axie scratch.
Those are the only two causes of scratching that she has heard of.
I however, have no idea what causes them to scratch there gils LOL sorry.

** theres some reasons thanks to Sharn ** heehee

yip mine went nuts when the ammonia soared. if its a once off i wouldnt worry too much but if it happens alot let us know and we may be able to help you sort it out. what are your water parameters?

i dont know how to test them

but how can i tell if its parasites, cause i sw another one do it do? but both their gills are fine what the?

take some water down to your local shop and ask them to test ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. get them to give you exact numbers- not just 'their fine'. you can buy test kits yourself which will be very helpful. generally when something goes wrong the first thing we look to is the water.

if the water is ruled out it could be parasites. some you can see some you cant. have a close look and see if you find anything suspicious.

how often do you do waterchanges, how much and how big is the tank, also how many occupants?

ok well, was 4 now trhee occupants, one got isolated cause she was really sick,... and still kinda is..., but she isnt floting as much now, yaya, anyway off topic, um, 4 foot by 1 foot by 1 and a bit foot, water cahnges at least once a week with about 50% gone, ok i'll get onto the thing with the pet shops, will do, but how do i know what is good and what is bad? athnk you for this by the way, the water is 20-22 dgrees celcius

Mat, how long have you had your 3 axies/new tank. Didn't you have another thread regarding your older axie metamorphising? Has your tank been cycled or not? That may be part of the problem.

good is ammonia 0, nitrite 0 and nitrate less that 40ppm (lower is better).

that tank size is good and your water changes are ok, most people prefer to do around 30% though, a bit easier. your tank was stocked good also, 4 is great for a 4 footer. the temp is a wee bit on the high side but still acceptable. from all that id say your doing a good job mathew

as kapo said if your tank is not cycled your axies will be rather uncomfortable with the ammonia and nitrite spikes, you will have to do daily w ter changes of at least 30%. if the tank has been running with occupants for at least a month i would say the cyclings finished or near the end (times do vary!!).
